Life is full of incredible twists and turns. Today more than any time in the last 20 years we live in some uncertain times. Uncertain for sure, but at the same time these are days of unprecedented opportunity!
What are we supposed to do in times like these?
Well, many people of faith often find that in times like this they often turn to the guidance that their faith provides. When times get tough people of faith often turn to prayer in order to find answers and direction through the challenges they are facing. They pray for guidance and direction to navigate the difficult waters around them. They pray for assistance to make the right decisions with their time, their investments, and their choices.
Now, this is definitely a great thing for us to do as we attempt to journey the road of life and faith as people who follow God today. However, sometimes I think we often miss out on another important aspect of seeking God’s guidance for the road ahead of us. You see, we often ask God to reveal the right decisions to make, to guide us along the way with the wisdom we need to face the constantly changing arenas around us! But God wants to be more than an advice giver, a personal GPS for our lives!
God desires more than anything to be our GUIDE for life!
God wants to be our guide. He wants to be our constant companion through His Holy Spirit as we make our way around this sometimes crazy world we live in! You see, God has already given us a road map for life called the Bible. The Holy Spirit is our guide for understanding and appreciating the directions that He has set out for us in this life manual.
However, far too often I find in my own life, and in the life of those I am fortunate enough to pastor, I find that we pray for guidance and not the guide!
God wants to be our constant companion and guide. He doesn’t just want to disperse information or wisdom and stand on the sidelines and cheer us on! God wants more than anything to be our guide, to guide us through relationship, as we face difficult health issues. As we face difficult financial decisions, God wants to be by our side and not just as sage waiting in the wings for us to call on. As we deal with the challenges of living out our faith in uncertain times, God wants more than anything to be right by our side!
The sons of Korah in Psalm 48, a psalm that discusses the issue of God’s presence, write these words…
“For that is what God is like. He is our God forever and ever, and he will be our guide until we die!” Psalm 48:14 NLT
God wants to be our GUIDE for the journey of life and faith in the 21st century and beyond. Maybe today it might be worth considering spending some time praying for God to be our guide rather than for the answers to our problems. As God guides in the way He desires, we will live with joy, security, and peace because He ultimately is the ONE who has our best interests at heart!
Praying for God’s continual guidance in the journey,
Rev Trev
